“See you at the beach handball tournament!” – Sławomir Szmal
One of the most outstanding goalkeepers in Polish history and in VIVE Tauron Kielce’s club history will be cheering his home country in the TWG 2017 beach handball competition.
“I’ve only played beach handball twice in my life and both times I had great memories, because as a goalkeeper I scored a goal, so I was doubly valuable!” recalls Szmal, who was chosen as the world’s best handball player in 2009.
Poland fields both men’s and women’s teams. On the men’s side, the host nation will face Hungary, Croatia and Egypt in Group B. “We’re playing at home, so that’s always a plus,” observs Szmal. “Even if our opponents are ranked higher, upsets can always happen when you play in your own country – and I’m counting on that!”
The women’s team will play in Group B together with Chinese Taipei, Brazil and Australia. Group A will feature Spain, Argentina, Norway and Tunisia. “Beach handball is such an exciting sport – you really can’t do without fans. You’ve got cool action, great goals and beautiful play – you just have to see it!” added Szmal.
Beach handball competitions begin on Wednesday, 26 July. The gold and bronze medal matches will be held on Saturday, 29 July. Tickets are still on sale for this uniquely interesting discipline.
I’ll be on hand in Wrocławfor at least a day and will be cheering with all my might,” said Szmal. “So see you at the beach handball tournament!”
